Sara Margaret Johnston Roscoe, 79, of Orono, MN passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2018. Sara was born at home in Edcouch, Texas on July 8,1939 to Sadie Margaret Lester and Samuel Sidney Johnston. Sara was the last of three children, and lived only a couple of blocks from the family grocery store. In the summer of 1947 Sara’s family moved to their new farm home at mile eleven north of Mercedes, Texas. She completed her primary education in the Mercedes school system graduating from Mercedes High School in 1957. Sara attended the Texas College of Arts and Industries, completing a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in May of 1961. At homecoming weekend October 11, 1958, she had a blind date with Marvin Roscoe, a 2nd Lieutenant stationed as Harlingen AFB, whom she later married September 3, 1960 at the Mercedes Methodist Church.Sara and Marvin went on a bit of a whirlwind in the 1960’s moving from Texas, to Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, back to Pennsylvania, and finally landing in Westfield, New Jersey in the summer of 1969 with two young children in tow. For the next twenty or so years, Sara focused on raising her children, entertaining friends and getting the most out of living so close to New York City. Although Sara never took a full-time teaching position, she did some substitute teaching in the Westfield public schools. In 1992 after Marvin’s retirement from AT&T, they moved to Austin, Texas to be closer to Sara’s family and for the warmer weather. Soon after, they joined the Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church, where they found a new community of friends. In August of 2005, after Marvin’s passing, Sara moved to Minneapolis, very near her son, where she somehow adapted to and tolerated the cold winters for more than a decade. She is survived by her daughter Marie Morrison and her husband Bob; son George Roscoe and his wife Kelly; and three grandchildren, Geordie Roscoe, Fallon Morrison and Kerry Morrison. The family wishes to thank her extended family and many friends for the joyful times she spent visiting, playing bridge, sharing recipes and doing the things that she so enjoyed during her lifetime.Funeral services will be held at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home in Gonzales, Texas on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. with Pastor Steve Youngdahl officiating.Friends may leave their condolences by visiting www.seydlerhillfuneralhome@stx.rr.com.
