Obituary for Hazel Estell Smith

Hazel Estell Smith, 85, of Luling, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2016. Hazel was born April 18, 1931 near McNeil to Sam and Ada Moore. Hazel married Alton Roland Smith on June 3, 1949 in Monahans, TX., a marriage that continued to bloom for nearly 59 years before Alton passed away on March 18, 2008. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God in Luling. Growing up on a farm near the McNeil area Hazel often found herself milking cows, slopping pigs, working alongside her siblings in the fields and attending school in the McNeil Country School. She moved to the city of Monahans in Ward County, Texas. Hazel and Alton moved around often following the oil field work before moving back to Luling in the early 1950’s. Hazel worked as a nurse’s aide at Luling Care Nursing and Rehab for many years. She loved people; she loved caring for people far beyond her usual duties at work. Hazel enjoyed visiting homebound friends and folks in the hospital. She loved her family and was an excellent mother and wife. Hazel thoroughly enjoyed telling scary stories to her grandchildren at bed time then sneaking outside their bedroom windows and frightening them even more, but all in humor of course. Her faith is her greatest legacy, she believed so fully in the love of God that she put her life in his hands and seldom took medication or needed to for that matter. She was that endearing small town lady that everyone called granny. No small town is complete without a granny, certainly many in Luling will miss her, but because she lived, Luling will always have had that special granny to remember. Hazel Estell Smith is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janie and Lou Garza of Corpus Christi, son and daughter-in-law, Leonard Wayne and Betty Smith of Luling, daughter-in-law, Royanne Smith of Austin, brother and sister-in-law, Spurgeon and Ellen Moore of Luling, grandchildren, Tarah Bosserman (Andrew), Joshua Smith, Misty Pagel (Ezra), Marisa Eastmon, Jeremy Toungate (Erin), Nick McCaughey (Jenny), Randy Thompson (Margie), great-grandchildren, Anthony, Landon, Cameron, Mazzy, Boza, Jachin, Kennedy, Millicent, Cassius, Henry, Dylan, Ty, Emily and Allison, and great-greatgrandchild, Hagen. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son, Alvin Rodney Smith, brothers, Milburn, Willie, Clifton, Cecil, and Marlin Smith, sisters, Edith Varnom, Louise Mager, Sadie Davis, Dorothy Curry and Berma Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 8, 2016 in O’Bannon Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Toungate officiating. Interment will follow in Hall Cemetery. Pallbearers: Joshua Smith, David Johnson, Gil Pedraza, Timmy Moore, Mark Moore, and Chad Schulle. The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday prior to the service in O’Bannon Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Hall Cemetery Association. Services are under the care and direction of O’Bannon Funeral Home.
