Obituary for Walter Otis "Walt" Mansfield

Our Husband, Dad and Grandfather, Walter Otis “Walt” Mansfield, 89, of Gonzales made his final journey home to be with our Heavenly Father. Rebecca, his faithful wife of nearly 50 years, was by his side the moment he stepped into glory on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. Walt was born during the great depression on September 27, 1932, to Otis and Iva Dugan Mansfield in the small town of Clay Center, Kansas. After he graduated from high school, Walt joined the United States Air Force, where he served for 24 years before retirement. Walt worked as an Aircraft and Engine Mechanic, a Certified Specialist and Crew Chief/NCOIC over the B-29 Superfortress, Convair B-36 “Peacemaker”, Boeing B-47 Stratojet, B-52 Stratofortress “BUFF”, Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, and Lockheed C-141 Starlifter. He continued his work throughout his career at the Naval Aviation Depot in Alameda, California, until his retirement. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He loved the Lord and served as a deacon with Eastside Baptist Church. He and Rebecca prepared countless meals for functions, set up for wedding receptions, church gatherings and helped those in need throughout their years in Gonzales.

Walt enjoyed restoring cars, woodworking, and completely restoring their historic home in Gonzales. If Rebecca could dream it up, he would finish it. He could build just about anything. When football season came around, you could find him in his recliner, remote in hand, Rebecca by his side, watching his beloved Dallas Cowboys. Every Thanksgiving, it was a tradition to cheer them on with all his sons close by. Paw Paw loved time with his multitude of grandchildren. He was a loving husband, a proud father, and a caring grandfather and will be dearly missed.

Walt is survived by his wife of almost 50 years Rebecca Strickland Mansfield of Gonzales; daughter Tina Lopez and husband Leonard of Yoakum; sons, David Mansfield and wife Lisa of Schroeder; Michael Mansfield of Cuero; Patrick Tucker and wife Sissy of Luling; Bobby Joe Brown and wife Claudia of San Antonio; Gerald Brown, Sr. and wife Ranee of Corpus Christi; and Troy Dale Mansfield and wife Amy of Gonzales; 27 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Wilma Copeland.

We give thanks to our Lord for the time He allowed us to spend with Walter, Dad, and Paw Paw. He will forever remain in our hearts. May he rest in Peace in the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ.
