Obituary

Simon Wesley Hendershot, Jr. was born on January 16, 1931 in the family home in Harwood, Texas. He went to heaven on January 26, 2020 at the age of 89. Throughout his life, he loved God, family and this country. He is preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Mayme Hendershot of Harwood, Texas, his sisters and brothers-in-law Tobe and Opal McGee of Lockhart, Texas, Jack and Mozelle Fullilove of Gonzales, Texas and Dr. Charles Williams of Houston, Texas. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rita Spinks Hendershot of Gonzales, Texas, his son, Simon Wesley {Trey) Hendershot, III and daughter-in-law Cherie Hendershot of Missouri City, Texas, three special granddaughters; Kelsey Hendershot, Sydney Hendershot, and Hailey Hendershot, sister, Merle Williams of Houston, Texas, sister-in-law Michelle Spinks Cobb of Midland, Texas, and beloved special friend Dora Rodela of Gonzales, Texas who has devoted endless hours of loving care. He has many loved nieces and nephews.
Simon graduated from Harwood High School in 1948 and from Texas A&M University in 1952. He received a commission into the United States Army, served in the United States Army Reserves as well as the Texas National Guard. Simon enjoyed serving his God in the church and the community. He was an active deacon and was so glad to serve in other areas. He enjoyed ranching, football, and attending his granddaughters’ events. He worked for the USDA and in farming and ranching. His favorite Bible verse is John 3:16 as he knew God loved him and sent His Son, Jesus to die for his sins. He would want everyone to share in this joy.
Simon was a Rotarian for many years and the Rotary motto is “Service Above Self.” Clearly this maxim meant more than just a catchy phrase to Simon, it was in part, the manner in which he lived. He was a quiet, humble man with a quick wit and endearing sense of humor. Certainly, there are many men throughout the world with Simon-like qualities, but Simon Hendershot was our person of note. A gentleman that lived his life as an example to others, pleasing to his Lord and Savior and a wonderful part of that which defines goodness in our community.
An interment service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2020 in Harwood Cemetery. The family will then receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 in the Gonzales First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. in the Gonzales First Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Nichols officiating. Serving as pallbearers are his nephews Bob McGee, JD Fullilove, Paul McGee, Carl Ohlendorf, Terry Black, Brett Kuntschik, David Fullilove, and Dr. James Williams. Honorary Pallbearers are; Deacons of First Baptist Church, Biscuit and Gravy Boys, Supper Club Friends, Field and Stream Bible Class, Firmin LePori, Jr., Phil Breitschopf, Dr. Sam Glass, Danny Janecka, Dr. Jorge Quirch, Gene Manson, Christopher Manson, JJ Johnson and Bobby Spinks.
The family thanks friends and other family members for their love and support. We also would like to thank the staff at the Texan Nursing Home, and the staff at Gonzales Memorial Hospital who have been attentive to all of Simon’s health needs under the guidance of Dr. Commie Hisey and Dr. James T. Willerson, St. Luke’s Heart Hospital, Houston, Texas. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Friends may leave their condolences by visiting www.seydlerhillfuneralhome.com. Services are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.

The times that Simon and Trey took my Aggie buddies and me coon hunting are still talked about when we get together. We had a lot of fun following those dogs at night! I had a lot of laughs with Simon over the years. I will miss him and his humor.
