Obituary for Shirley Dean Simmons (Johnson)

Shirley Dean Johnson Simmons went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at the age of 83. She was surrounded by her loved ones at her home in Gonzales. Shirley was born June 8, 1937 at her family home in Streeter, TX to Ira Jack Johnson and Frances Marie Cravey Johnson. She married the love of her life Walter Kennon Simmons, Sr. on May 25, 1956 in Gonzales, TX. Together they had three daughters and one son.

Shirley Had a beautiful personality and never met a stranger. Everyone she met, she loved and told them so. She loved being with her family and having large gatherings. She prided herself in knowing she had a part in having all of her loving family. Shirley loved to garden when she was able and always talked about having another large garden that her kids would take care of for her. She loved playing bingo, card games and entertaining her family and friends. Most of all she loved her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Shirley is survived by her daughters; Brenda Simmons Harkey “Barry”, Wanda Simmons, and Sanya Simmons; son; Walter Kennon Simmons, Jr. “Laurie”, sister; Joyce Elaine Johnson, brother; Douglas Charles Johnson “Gina”; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Frankie Johnson, and brothers, J.L. Johnson, Johnnie Elmer Johnson.
In her family’s eyes, Shirley was a hero. She had survived breast cancer twice and remained a strong and determined woman.

The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2021 in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. in the Seydler-Hill Funeral Home following visitation with Rev. Clint Lowery officiating. Interment will follow in Saturn Cemetery. Pallbearers: Kennon Harkey, B.J. Harkey, Jonathan Harkey, Thomas Irle, Jr., Duke Irle, Randy Harkey, Jr., and Dean Vinklarek. Honorary pallbearers: Brandi Vinklarek, Mary Irle, Kerri Simmons, Brittany Harkey, Katherine Harkey, Jacey Harkey, Kristi Harkey, Chase Simmons and all the great grandchildren. Due to current CDC, State and local mandates, protective measures regarding social distancing, limited attendance capacity, and use of personal protective masks will be required for the visitation, chapel service and graveside burial rite. Those remotely symptomatic of COVID-19 are politely asked not to attend. Services are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.
