Obituary for Mary Ann Corrigan (Smith)
Mary Ann Smith Corrigan, of Dallas, passed away June 19, 2022 at the age of 88. She will be laid to rest in Gonzales, Texas, the place she always called home, next to her beloved husband, Jack and parents, Carlos and Sue Smith.
Mary Ann was born on January 25, 1934, at the Holmes Hospital. She was the second child born to Carlos and Sue, lifelong residents of Gonzales and part of a family that, for generations, played a significant role in Gonzales history. Except for the time the family lived in Cape Cod during World War II, growing up Mary Ann was a Gonzales girl.
After graduating as a class favorite from Gonzales High School, she pursued her college education at The University of Texas. She loved to tell her daughters stories of her UT days when she especially loved dating Aggies and wearing their letter sweaters around campus. This gives one a glimpse into her sweet “orneriness.”
Mary Ann continued her life adventure after graduation by moving to New York City to work for Trans World Airlines (TWA). Although she loved life in the city, it was not home and after about a year, she returned to Texas and accepted a position with Joske’s of Texas in San Antonio. It was here that she met her future husband, Jack, when he was a management trainee and she was responsible for his “training.” They married in Gonzales in August 1958 and lived in San Antonio until moving to Northern California in 1974. It did not take Mary Ann long to realize she would never be a California girl and within a few years, the family moved to Richardson/Dallas.
Jack and Mary Ann made many trips to Gonzales over the years because it would always be home. Their daughters Sue Ann and Jacque spent so many weekends and summers there that Gonzales was home to them, too.
Mary Ann was blessed with extraordinary creativity, able to do just about anything she decided to do. She was a talented seamstress, baker (she was known for her Christmas cookies), artist, nationally recognized judge for the American African Violet Society, kindergarten teacher, periodic substitute Church pianist and avid history buff. She liked dogs but LOVED cats.
Mary Ann was above all a dedicated mother, daughter, wife, grandmother and child of God. The best times were with family and friends seated around the kitchen table. So many memories of laughter and love are comforting now, and we imagine the great Heavenly reunion, all around a kitchen table.
And, amid all the challenges life would present, her faith never wavered. She would always say, “The Lord will take care of it. Day by day.”
Mary Ann is survived by her daughters Sue Ann Turnage of Fort Worth and Jacqueline Lee and her husband Mark of Garland; grandchildren Kate (and her husband Jon), Casey (and his wife Jordan), Reed and Corri.
A family graveside service will be held on July 23 with arrangements handled by Seydler Hill Funeral Home.
