Obituary for John Robert Brown

John Robert Brown, of Gonzales, passed away Thursday, June 29, 2023. He was born on July 13, 1938, in Hebbronville, TX to his parents Griggs Weldon Brown and Edith Mae Holbein Brown.

In his early years, John served in the United States Army and later went to work as a gauger for Valero. John retired and enjoyed his time here in Gonzales. His happy place was in his recliner watching football and westerns, like Gunsmoke, and deer hunting at the Brown Farm. He was often referred to as “Donnie” by some family members. His family will treasure many fond memories of him and will miss his presence deeply.

John is survived by his daughters Joan Lynette Brown Behrens and her husband John of Port Lavaca, TX, Karen Anita Brown of New York City, NY, and his stepdaughter Angela Dawn Hawkins Brandenberger and her husband Max of Kyle, TX. He is also survived by his sister Beverly Brown Plank and her husband Rhett of Canyon, TX, sister-in-law Claudette Brown of Nacogdoches, TX, 4 nieces (DeeDee, Sharon, Noelle, Crystal) and one nephew (Greg) along with three grandchildren, Holly Behrens Rader and husband Evan of Tea, SD, Brooke Behrens Hochgraber and husband Brandon of Rockport, TX, Lee Ellen Brandenberger and fiancé Zach of Denver, CO, along with 2 great-grandchildren, Braxton and Brendalyn Hochgraber and one more great-grandson on the way.

He is preceded in death by his parents Griggs Weldon Brown and Edith Mae Holbein Brown and his brother Charles William Brown.

A visitation will take place Friday, July 7, 2023, at Seydler – Hill Funeral Home from 9:00am to 10:00am. A funeral service will take place at 10:00am with services officiated by Rev. Dr. Matt J. Pennington of First Methodist Church in Gonzales. Interment will follow at Gonzales Memorial Park Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Terry Eska, Jimmy Selzer, Rhett Plank and Stacey Urbina. Pallbearers are Greg Brown, Brian Keith, Tracy Gillett, Max Brandenberger, Brandon Hochgraber, Evan Rader, and John Behrens.

In lieu of flowers, one may make a memorial donation to Parkinson’s research or Meals on Wheels of Gonzales County.
