Obituary for James Carl "J.C." Avant

Funeral services for James Carl (J.C.) Avant, of Wrightsboro, who died on Wednesday in an Austin hospital following a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease, are set for Monday, Jan 11, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with Pastor Rhonda Troll officiating. Pallbearers: Wayne Aschenbeck, Jimmy Avant, Brandon Avant, Kyle Bandy, Brent Bandy, Joshua Avant, Kade Avant, Brittany Avant Garcia and Fred Billings. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. immediately prior to the service.

J.C. was born on Jan. 19, 1939 in the Hamon Community, to JC and Mary Malatek Avant, the third of five children born to the couple. He was raised on the Guadalupe River, where he swam, boated, fished, swung from a cable he attached to a limb high in a huge oak tree over the river and generally had a great time growing up with the Zella boys and Hinton’s who lived nearby.

He was married to Bradley Farmer Avant on May 30, 1958 and the next year he followed his father-in-law into working for Southwestern Associated Telephone Co., which later became General Telephone Co. They lived and raised their three children while traveling with a telephone construction crew up and down the Rio Grande Valley. He spent several years working in Nixon with Jack Bertling and the last few back in Gonzales with two other special friends, Wayne Aschenbeck and Juan Gaytan. He retired front the company after 35 years and was honored with a retirement party by the GTE family.

He is survived by his wife, Bradley, three children, Tommy, Bobby (Connie) and Carla Avant Bandy; grandchildren Joshua Carl Avant (Melody) and son Henri, Brittany Avant Garcia (Josh); Kade Avant, Kyle Bandy (Samantha), Ryan James (R.J.) Bandy (Robin) and daughter Parker, and Brent Avant Bandy; a brother Clifton Jim Avant (Patsy), sisters Louene Ann Eldridge (Joe) and Joyce Avant Campion of Smithville, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dorothy Svoboda and brothers-in-law, Joe Svoboda and Ralph Campion.
