Obituary for Jack Mark Dubose

Jack Mark Dubose of Gonzales, Texas said his last goodbyes to his family on March 30, 2023 at age 93. He was born at home to Warren and Merle Dubose on a frigid January day. The Dubose family was in the poultry and egg business and Jack became a leader in several poultry associations after graduating from Baylor with a dual degree in economics and political science. He served two years in the Airforce as a Lieutenant at Oson AFB in Korea. His service earned him a National Defense medal, a Korean Service medal, and a UN Service medal. He returned home to work for the family in the egg business as a route salesman. He married Dyna Lynn Vordenbaum in Gonzales on October 17, 1959 at the First Baptist Church. They went on to bring three children into the world, Tara, Mark & Sean.

Jack was the youngest of four siblings and was often left under the care of his older sister Chic and cousin Dimples. The girls were fond of him but often could be heard saying “we can’t go out because we have to watch the kid.” As an adolescent, he would ride a bus to San Antonio to take piano lessons and became such an accomplished player that he would play in recitals at the San Pedro Playhouse. Jack loved cars and bought a black Ford Thunderbird convertible, that as rumor has it, he was known to drive extremely fast down the local country roads of Central Texas. In the 70’s he came home with a jet boat which was not a nice surprise to his wife Dyna but ended up being quite the joy to his children. Guadalupe river trips in the boat with his favorite cold beer always resulted in an adventure that his kids enjoyed!

As a leader in the poultry world, he served on numerous Texas and National Egg boards. He served as president of Southeastern Poultry and Egg Association and also went to Congress to testify against the government as they were putting forth a false narrative that eggs were bad for your health. Eggs continued to be big part of his life even in retirement.

In the early 60’s, he and Dyna purchased a small farm south of Gonzales on the Guadalupe River where he constructed his own laying hen chicken houses. During this time, he took a fondness to ranching Red Angus Cattle bred to red Beef Master Bulls, many ended up with their own unique names, often times named after the breeders they were purchased from. Cattle round ups could never be completed without Jack handing the cowboys a cold Coors Light or two! The Guadalupe River afforded the ranch a unique gravel bar that became the site of many cool sits on hot summer days. I promise this, his kids and extended family along with many, many friends enjoyed that little slice of tranquility! Later in life, he and Dyna took over the ceramic Easter egg business from his mother-in-law Stella and it was Jack’s job to write the name and date on each egg, firing the eggs and of course delivery. By the way, he became an expert at the craft.

His great joy was getting to spend time with his grandchildren and pickup rides with family around the property or trips to town to get a DQ blizzard.

Jack is survived by his wife Dyna Dubose, daughter Tara Dubose and spouse Lisa Smith, son Jack Mark Dubose Jr and wife Candice Dubose, son Sean DuBose and wife Lana DuBose, granddaughter Lauren Leite and husband Eric Leite, grandson Austin Dubose, grandson Will DuBose, grandson Jack DuBose, and grandson Cole DuBose.
