Obituary

Gerald Julian Fougerat, Sr., 89, went to his heavenly home to be with his beloved wife, Annie, on September 6, 2019. He was born amidst the Great Depression on September 17, 1929 in a farmhouse near the Five Mile Community of Gonzales County. There was no doctor to assist in his mother’s delivery of Gerald and no electricity to light the rooms. Just kerosene lanterns and the blessed event of natural childbirth to a loving family. Gerald was too young to remember the difficult times of the Great Depression, but his parents certainly did, and it had a profound effect on his life. When something needed doing, you did it yourself because there wasn’t money to hire it done. Gerald became a proficient carpenter, plumber, electrician, shade tree mechanic, farmer, rancher and all-around handyman. His garden provided valuable food for the whole family. Gerald took great pride in doing his work right the first time. After a long career as a draftsman for the Texas Highway Department, he retired to his love of farming and ranching. He loved the simple things in life like a newborn calf, the smell of fresh cut hay, the way the soil smelled when it is plowed in the spring, his faithful cow dog, Dot and barbecuing for his family.
Gerald was an active member of St. James Catholic Church. For many years he and Annie hosted bible discussion groups at their home. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and he faithfully served many years in the Texas National Guard. Gerald gave many hours of his time working with the American Cancer Society driving people to their appointments for cancer treatments. Gerald was a generous man, always willing to help others. He had a tremendous work ethic which he imparted into his children and grandchildren where his legacy will lovingly live on through each of them
Gerald J. Fougerat, Sr., is survived by his adoring family, Gerald, Jr., (Debbie), Michael, Denise Windwehen (Jimmy) and Kenneth (Karen) all of Gonzales, sister, Teresa Simcik of Victoria, grandchildren, Angela Tiller (Dee), Matthew Fougerat (Patty), Brooke Upstrom, Lance Fougerat, Anna Kloesel (Jason), Kelsey Bouler (Tyson) and Kendall Fougerat, greatgrandchildren, Kameron Glass, Taylor Glass, Ace Tiller, Dylon Cantrell, Logan Cantrell, Alyssa Cantrell, Townes Fougerat, Julian Fougerat, Morgan , Macee and Bryce Tiller, Tyley Bouler, Tanner Bouler, and Jake Kloesel. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Annie Mica Fougerat whom he married on November 25, 1953 in Flatonia, his parents, Julian Fougerat and Mary Beeson Fougerat, a sister, Dorothy Garner and brothers-in-law, Jimmy Simcik, Gentry Garner and George Wissmann.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, September 12, 2019 in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 13, 2019 in St. James Cemetery with Deacon John Klapuch officiating.
