Obituary for Genaro Alonzo Saldana

Genaro Alonzo Saldaña, 81, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, May 1st, 2023. He was born November 6, 1941, to his parents Jose Hilario and Angelica Garcia Saldaña in Kingsville, Texas. Genaro lost his mother at only 3 months of age; his maternal grandparents Andres and Margarita Garcia took him as their own son and raised him. Being the wonderful guardians that they were, Genaro considered them not as his grandparents, but as his true parents.

Genaro served in the US Army from 1963 to 1966, he then completed college at Texas A&I University in Kingsville in 1970. He married his wife Maria Guadalupe “Lupe” Rodriguez in 1973, and together they raised their son Andres “Andy” Alonzo Saldaña. Genaro was an educator for 27 years, most of his time was spent teaching at Gonzales High School as a Geography, History and Spanish teacher. Outside of work he enjoyed coaching Little League baseball. He was an avid Dallas Cowboy football fan and a New York Yankees baseball fan. Genaro was involved at St. James Catholic Church as a Eucharist Minister for many years. After retiring from teaching, he enjoyed traveling overseas with his wife Lupe, together they shared many great memories together. Genaro enjoyed his spare time drinking coffee with his buddies at the Dairy Queen and McDonald’s. He loved spending time with his four grandchildren AJ, Olivia, Evan, and Angelo. His life was devoted to his faith and his family, his presence will be deeply missed by family and friends.

Genaro is preceded in death by his parents Andres and Margarita Garcia, his daughter Laura Estella Saldaña and his brother Jose Saldaña, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife Maria Guadalupe “Lupe” Saldaña, his son Andy Alonzo Saldaña (Gina), his grandchildren AJ, Olivia, Evan and Angelo, his siblings Yolanda Trevino (Ted), Tommie Gilliam (Dan), and Frank Saldaña (Elena).

A visitation will be held at St. James Catholic Church from 9:00 am to 9:30 am, a rosary will follow at 9:30 am. Mass of The Resurrection will begin at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at St. James Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers include John Davis, Víctor Garcia, Ino Sepúlveda, Vincent Rodríguez, David Ibarra and Frank Saldaña, Jr.
