Obituary for Elizabeth Irene Elliott (Bush)

Elizabeth Irene Elliott, 103, of Gonzales, formerly of Georgetown, passed away Monday, February 17, 2020. She was born January 15, 1917 in Cotton County, Oklahoma to William and Nellie (Olson) Bush. After the death of her mother and a few months later of her father in 1918, Irene was raised by her grandparents, John and Cassandra (Kaiser) Bush in Kress, Texas. After living several years with her father’s sister Clara May Callens and her husband John in Ridgley, Tennessee, she returned to her grandparents for high school where she met Rawleigh Elliott. Irene attended Amarillo Junior College and worked in Dallas until Rawleigh graduated from Texas A & M. They married in 1939 and moved to Midland, Texas, where their daughter was born. While Rawleigh served in the Pacific during WWII, Irene worked at Midland Army Airfield. After the war and the birth of their son, they sold their tractor dealership and moved to Georgetown, Texas, in 1950. Irene was active in various civic organizations: the March of Dimes, the public library, Woman’s Club, Garden Club and scouts. She fondly remembered her time as leader of Girl Scout Troop 11, made up of girls mainly from the Class of 1958 and her den of Cub Scouts. Irene was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Irene played bridge with a close group of friends for almost 50 years. Needlework and china painting were among her creative outlets. Irene and Rawleigh traveled to Hawaii with a group of Aggies and to Europe with his brother and his wife. They cruised Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. For ten years, after Rawleigh’s death, Irene lived at The Wesleyan at Estrella where she made new friends and renewed old friendships as some Georgetown friends took up residence there. The last few years were spent at The Heights of Gonzales near her daughter. Irene was preceded in death by her husband Rawleigh Elliott and by her grandson Patrick Elliott. Irene is survived by her daughter Sandra and her husband William “Skip” Miller of Gonzales Texas, son William “Bill” Elliott and wife Gayle Uhruh of Jefferson, Missouri; granddaughters Susan Miller and husband Kevin Schields of Harwood, Texas, Stacey Miller and husband Brian Good of Bee Cave, Texas, and Lisa Cobb and her husband Jason of Austin, Texas. Her great-grandchildren are Nora Cobb, Byron Cobb and Jake Good. Irene and Rawleigh are to be inurned in Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home, 906 St. Paul St., Gonzales, TX.
