Obituary for Barbara Ann DeBerry (Turek)

Surrounded by her family, Barbara Ann Turek DeBerry passed in peace on August 10, 2021, at the age of 83. She was born in Shiner, Texas on October 7, 1937, to Otto and Bessie Darilek Turek and was the oldest of 3 children. Growing up in Shiner was special to Barbara and she loved to go there often through the years to visit family and friends.

She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Bill DeBerry. She was a devoted Mother to her daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Tim Hubert and her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Cindy DeBerry. She was an energetic and fun “Babby” to her precious grandchildren Kyle DeBerry, Cole and Courtney DeBerry, and Alexandria (DeBerry) and Tyler Beede; and her great-grandchild, Dawson Ryder DeBerry. She was the big “Sister” to her brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Karen Turek, and Billy and Patty Turek. She was “Aunt Barbara” to so many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews that she loved dearly. Other surviving family that loved and will miss her until they meet again are Dorothy (DeBerry) and Billy Yager, Judy DeBerry, and Shirley (DeBerry) and H.D. McCarty.

Barbara loved her family and was always looking for ways to bring them together. She hosted the annual “DeBerry-Turek” Easter celebration for over 50 years and took great pride in telling everyone how many people she was going to feed. It was a cherished time and gave her and the family beautiful memories.

Barbara was sweet and spirited, she never met a stranger, and she loved being with her many, many friends. There was always time for a game of bridge, a morning of exercise, a lunch or dinner, a club meeting, a day of shopping, a church service, a Christmas tea, and taking food to a sick friend. She never missed a beat and thrived on being a good friend. It was always important to her to live a life that put others first and she worked hard at it.

She loved fellowship and was very active in her community as a long-time member of the Sesame Club and the Spade & Trowel Garden Club. She and Bill were charter members of the couples Supper Club that met for a monthly dinner for over 61 years.

Most importantly, Barbara loved the Lord our God and knew she would one-day be in his kingdom. She served God with her talent of music and teaching Sunday school in her early years. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and loved her various bible studies with friends and family.

Services to celebrate Barbara’s life will be at First United Methodist Church in Gonzales at 11 a.m. on Saturday August 14, 2021. Reception to follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Gonzales Public Library, or Gonzales Healthcare Systems Foundation / Thrive Healthplex. Interment will be held in Denton Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and nephews: Kyle DeBerry, Cole DeBerry, Tyler Beede, Michael Turek II, Greg Littler, Daniel Boedeker, Jaime Pohler, Todd Copeland, Brian Muecke, Larry Yager, and John Yager.
